June 24, Day 9: Fort Collins Colorado to Collinsville, Illinois

When your plan is to travel for over 40 days and cover nearly 8000 miles, you generally have a few very long driving days. Today was one of those. We got up had breakfast at Denny’s and were on the road by 7:30 AM. This day would take us through eastern Colorado, all across Kansas, all across Missouri and into Illinois. We covered over 900 miles and drove 15 hours. Why in the world would we do that? You might ask. Our next significant part of the journey all takes place in Ohio. Colorado and Ohio have several states in between, so today and tomorrow are long driving days.

We sometimes look with scorn on people who consider the middle of the country “flyover zones”.  In the past, we have made plans to take our time across these various states. We have spent a lot of time in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, North and South Dakota, Iowa. But sometimes you got to just keep on driving. So we did. Dick did the lion share of driving, but Patti also took several shorter times to give him a rest. We both took advantage of our back of the minivan comfy sleeping area to take a nap while the other was driving. You can snooze sitting in the passenger seat, but there’s nothing like being able to really go off duty and take a good nap for an hour, waking up refreshed and ready to get back in the front and drive again.

So mostly we drove and we looked at the changes in the landscape. Eastern Colorado and Western Kansas are very, very flat. It was much more arid in the west and it got increasingly green with trees as we drove east. The temperatures remained around 100°. Stopping for gas, which we had to do several times In driving 900 miles, it was always shocking how hot it was outside, and we are ever grateful for our good quality air conditioning in our minivan.

We spent some time listening to audiobooks including a cool one about women in World War II who  provided the bulk of the US code breaking in the fight against Germany and Japan in World War II. This was a fascinating fascinating book. The title is called “Code Girls.”

We were very happy to finally fall in bed once we reached our hotel.
