July 1, Day 16 Bellbrook, Ohio to Indianapolis, Indiana to Lafayette, Indiana

Our days of sleeping late and having leisurely breakfast with John and Beverly have now come to an end. We were all up at 7 AM for a nice breakfast, packing the car and saying goodbye in the rain.

On this dreary rainy day, we are headed over to Indianapolis, a little over a 2 Hour Dr. away from Dayton, hoping to have some nice sightseeing there. Patti was concerned that it wasn’t going to be a good day in Indianapolis. But, we decided to go ahead with our plan to head to the Indianapolis zoo.

The zoo was a great choice! As the day went on it got dryer and sunny here… And fairly muggy from the rain. But this was a lovely zoo and we really enjoyed ourselves. Highlights included a bird show, seeing a training session with orangutans using a computer touchscreen to demonstrate their learning, and many, many wonderful animals. We also saw a really wonderful dolphin show.

And a big highlight was a butterfly garden. We have had several magical experiences in butterfly gardens around the country. This one was also wonderful. Both of us had the experience of a butterfly landing on us, and we also got many wonderful close up photos of these colorful butterflies as they fluttered around the beautiful glass conservatory. We weren't expecting to see butterflies here. Very, very nice.

Having done what we could in Indianapolis, we now drove an hour and a half down the road to the north west corner of Indiana for our hotel sleep for the night. We wanted to be in an easy position for some visits with friends in Chicago.

We had a hefty dinner at a local Cracker Barrel restaurant, and then went back to our hotel room early.  While Dick worked pictures, we both caught up on some news on MSNBC, and Patti took it to our evening nap tired from the day at the zoo.

Dick noted that as we turned to Indianapolis we have reached our far eastern part of our trip, and are now headed back west and north for the next weeks.
