July 8, day 23: Twin Cities

Today was one of the most event/friend-intensive days of our trip.

We started off with a stop at Home Depot where Dick picked up some of the materials that he would need to build, along with our friend Keith, a little free library. The two men would meet later in the afternoon to do the “rough cuts” of the wood. Then we will drive it up north tomorrow and take it on the boat to the lake at the Unitarian church camp where we will spend six days. There Dick and Keith will do more work assembling our little free library. Then we will drive it back home to San Diego where Dick will finish painting and mounting the little free library in our front yard. If you don’t not know about little free library‘s, take a look. In all likelihood there is one or more near you. It is a great thing for people to leave free books to be taken and take free books home to read. Kind of catch and release for books. So we got our plywood and other things in the car, then drove it to Keith and Anne‘s house where we left it for later this afternoon.

Then we went on to have a very lovely reconnecting lunch with our friend, Faith. We’ve lost track of each other for sometime, but recently reconnected and we’re really happy to have lunch out on her deck of her very very lovely home. She has a home on the edge of the lake that has been really beautifully decorated. We enjoyed good conversation, good food, as well as the fun of watching the water fowl flying over the lily pads. Really a lot of fun catching up on a lot of time that we had missed with one another. Then it was time to hop in the car and head back into South Minneapolis.

There we spent a delightful couple hours meeting with our friend Kay. Patti worked at accessible space, the independent living program where Kay lives. They figure it was it a least 33 years ago that Patti worked there, and has remained friends with Kay all during that time. We filled Kate in on some of the details from our trip, including particularly what we learned on the Amish farm. Kay also shared some of her travel experiences and farm experiences. Although Patti talks to Kay regularly by phone, it is so nice to actually be in the same space to gather. All the time passed so quickly.

Then we were back to Keith‘s house where Keith and Dick spent Time getting that wood ready for the trip to the island. There is a wood shop on the island, but Keith‘s garage has so many wonderful tools, that they wanted to take advantage of that.

Well Keith and Dick were building and consulting, Patti got to spend some really great time with and granddaughter Zoe. Zoe just completed second grade, and is very vibrant and smart. The two of them put together a puzzle, looked for deer, and played a hot game of Brain Quest. All too soon, the little free library was prepped, and we needed to head off in the car for our dinner date.

Back in south Minneapolis we had a delightful dinner of authentic Chinese takeout food hosted by our friends Scott and Flo. The backyard was a beautiful setting to enjoy conversation plenty of delicious food, and just a joy of being able to be together with longtime friends. We appreciated the long summer days giving us light in the backyard in till nearly 930, then dusk had really fallen and it was time to head back to our hotel. Another really lovely time.

One of the best thingsAbout this summer has been not necessarily the beautiful outdoor places that we’ve seen (although those have been great), But the chance to have even a little bit of good catch-up time with some family and friends. We regret we didn’t have more time to see even more of our good precious people. But look forward to future trips with more time catching up.

We fell into bed tired but satisfied!
