July 11, Day 26: Camp Unistar

Oh we were so happy to wake up on our island, ready for a lovely day. Dick was able to capture the peaceful morning light on the way to breakfast. There is a lovely waterfront at the camp, and we would utilize it during the week.

After the waterfront orientation, Patti took her turn on trying a paddle board. It was quite fun and pretty easy, until it wasn’t and she flipped off in her board sending it away out on the lake. She offered Dick the opportunity to try, and he also enjoyed it and then joined her in taking a little flip off the board. Who knew these things even in a calm lake could still be pretty tippy?

Dick was really excited to have the opportunity to take a sunfish sailboat out for a sale. It had been many years since he had sailed solo. He enjoys sailing very much, and was pleased that the skills came back to him. It was a lighter wind day, but a nice one for a sale on a small boat.

The island was full of many beautiful things, including some flowers and so much green. We were so pleased to see an abundance of Columbines.

One of the unusual projects that would happen in the course of the week was Keith would assist Dick in building a Little Free Library. This is a wonderful worldwide project where people have small sized boxes where their neighbors can come and take books home for free, and share some of their own if they’d like. We’ve been wanting to have one of these for a long time, and Dick had created a very cool design. Keith had made a number of these already, and had a lot of experience building things at the camp, so he really knew what tools were available in the camp's woodworking shop. Together, they figured out how the two of them could use several days worth of time to nearly finish a beautiful little free library for our home in San Diego. Dick had purchased most of the wood we would need for this project while we were in the Twin Cities, and we brought that along on the boat. Keith had generously helped to cut some of the boards in advanced so they could be strategic in how much wood they needed to haul along.

Three times every day we were called to our wonderful meals by a staff member blowing on a conch shell. Staff and campers would gather to eat wonderful, healthy food that was so lovingly prepared and served by our staff. We all ate a lot of food during the week. And meal times also became opportunities when we could talk with and get to know staff and other camper families.
