July 4, Day 19, Rochester, Minnesota

The Fourth of July dawned with a beautiful clear sky day. Patti and her Mom, Joan, went off to a church service at their family church, Bethel Lutheran Church. There was lots of beautiful patriotic music and it was nice to be back at this church where Patti had grown up. Her mom got through Covid in part by learning how to watch church services on YouTube. The congregation was very glad to be back to meeting in person again.

More fun time with family today. There were several walks with the dog, in the heat of the day, well over 90. And we really enjoyed our nephew, Josh, coming over and sharing his experiences having just graduated from high school during Covid, as well as his trip to the state tournament in tennis. Lots of fun just getting caught up there.

Patti’s Mom cooked another good meal. With turkey and vegetables, it smelled and tasted like Thanksgiving…always nice to have a good Mom home cooked meal.

Then, after dinner Patti and Dick joined brother Perry and his wife Jodi to go off for a Fourth of July celebration in a park in central Rochester. Dick, always on the look out for animals saw a number of rabbits. There was an 80s cover band playing songs by Chicago. It was such a joyful gathering with so many families coming out spreading out blankets and sitting in chairs in the park. All of us reflected on how last year there were no fireworks, no bands playing, no people gathering. It was a large and joyful celebration. The band was so happy having an in person paid gig.

When it was finally dark the fireworks were out in their full glory. There was lots of joyfulness that it was safe enough to join together this year. With lots of chances to catch up on what had been going on with Perry and Jodi and their family. And then we were appreciative of Perry‘s skill and getting us out of the big crowds and home in record time. Happy Fourth of July. We are so glad to be celebrating.
