Day, 21: July 5 Rochester, Minnesota to Chicago to Merriville Indiana

We woke up early and finished packing up the car. Patti‘s mom made sure that we had a good breakfast and some lunch for the road. It’s always a little teary saying goodbye when you live so far away. We had a good visit, but time to hit the road.

We followed cloudy stormy skies all the way to Chicago. All the land throughout the Midwest is dry due to lack of rain so everyone is hoping for some more rain. We drove through a few scattered showers, but mostly just threatening skies.

We were glad to pick up our friend Mike, and go out to a diner for lunch in Chicago. We’ve known Mike since we all lived in the Twin Cities and always look forward to catching up with him if we’re in the Chicago area. We had a nice visit, swapping news and talking about families and travel.

Then, we drove on a little ways further to our hotel in Indiana for the night. We put in about 400 miles today, but it was pretty easy driving much of the way. (Just for comparison for our European family and friends, that’s about the same as driving from Copenhagen to Berlin). We were ready for a quieter evening, and a good night’s sleep after having had a very intensive week in Minnesota.
