Day 18: July 2,2025 Dayton Ohio

We woke up to a bright sunny day.  We joined John and Beverly for a nice brunch at one of their favorite places, Blueberries which specializes in a giant, full-plate-sized pancake, which John and Beverly split.

After talking, laughing and saying goodbye, we then spent the afternoon in a place that Dick had really enjoyed so much when he lived for many years in Dayton: The Carillon Park. This was a place with a lot of history about Dayton and we enjoyed the afternoon there.  Dick considers Dayton to be his home town since he lived there for over 20 years, including much of his childhood.

This park was established in 1950, and Dick had been there on and off  for 50 years.  Some significant things have now been updated in it since the last time he had been there. The information about the history of Dayton was fascinating. Many important companies and inventions came out of this city including: the airplane, self starter for cars, cash register, non-sparking electric motor, ink jet printer, commercial pressure fryer, and precast concrete bridge system.  There was at one point more patents per capita than any other city in the US.

The display of National Cash Register Company( NCR) was spectator with hundreds of vintage cash registers on display.

Dayton was also where the Wright Brothers researched and built their first airplanes. There was a whole separate museum at the Park run by the National Park Service. They had one of the original planes that flew in Kitty Hawk, NC. We have enjoyed learning about the Wright Brothers including visiting Kitty Hawk, but this was very well done and we were glad to soak in some new information.

There were many other historic buildings as part of the park, as well as a lot of things dedicated to the history of transportation in the area, including the kind of trolleys Dick rode as a child living in this area. It all. brought up a lot of fond memories for Dick.

The evening was spent with our great niece Caetey, husband Tim, and their bright and adorable daughter, Lena. Lena is a playful and very spirited year-old. She remembered Dick from having been here six weeks ago as the guy with the white beard. She made Patti‘s heart happy by immediately going to her and asking if she wanted to play together. They had a nice time playing , talking and dancing before it was time for Lena to go to bed.

Then the adults had a fun time hanging out and talking about our lives and travel. We so enjoy our time with them.  We wish we were closer to all of our family to be able to spend more regular time together, but we grab the time that is available. Time is so precious.
