What do you do all day long when you are on a road
trip? Easiest answer: you just drive, and keep on driving. Today was a medium sized day with a total of
310 miles of driving. Dick is mostly
just interested in the landscapes, the changes in the crops and trees, what the
traffic is like. He often will pull out
his camera (in a safe area, of course) to capture something that caught his
eye. On this stretch, he was struck by the number of
canola fields we were seeing. It is
amazing that canola oil comes from the many tiny seeds on these plants.
As we neared Ottawa, the end of the holiday weekend traffic
got much heavier. Dick noticed the many
cars with canoes or kayaks fastened to the car roofs as the people headed back
to work after a fun weekend on the water.
Patti needs more entertainment, and so she might listen to a
storytelling podcast, read a murder mystery, even write on the blog (NOT while she is driving, of course), or crawl
in the back for a nap. Naps are often in
order. Being on the road can be tiring
and she is needing to catch up on her sleep.
We were both pleased to pull into the driveway of Dick’s
sister, Marti, and her husband, Nigel’s home at about 3:30 in the
afternoon. This meant we were very much
on track with Dick’s excellent Excel
spreadsheet calculations as to how much time it should take each day to get
where we need to for that day. Often he is within minutes in his estimation
(this is Patti bragging about this skill!)
We were warmly greeting and welcomed for a much needed break
from the road. Marti and Nigel are great
hosts and we were quickly settled in for some nice TLC including super
food. So nice to spend time with family,
which we will be able to do several times during this journey.
After a lovely dinner, we all went down for a walk along the
Ottawa River. The sun was starting to go
down and it was so nice. We saw some
very pretty sights as we walked and talked, along with their dog, Tessa. What a sweetie! We turned to go into the woods, only to soon
be turned back with swarming mosquitoes.
We sure don’t have those in San Diego, at least in the quantities that
we were swatting!
The return to the river’s side turned out to be well-timed
as the sun was seriously turning into a beautiful sunset. What a delightful end to our day!!!
