We arrived at
this small city at the most northern tip of Denmark to an amazing blue sky
perfect day. As we got off the ship and went into the tourist information
center, we heard that the day before had been raining and the day before that
the cruise ship did not even stop the weather was so rough. We were thrilled
and immediately went out to rent bikes for the day.
The peninsula was
flat and so bikes were perfect for exploring the area. We rode about 3 miles
out towards the area where the Baltic and the North Seas met.
On the way, we
saw a lighthouse and walked along the shore. It was so beautiful! We parked our
bikes and then followed the people walk toward the Point. There was a powerful
feeling it drawing us all to this place where probably people had gathered for
thousands of years. People of all ages walked towards the place that the waters
came together. Patti especially enjoyed the children. This was also an area
where the German’s had bunkers during World War II.
We traded photo
taking with several people. Some went
out to stand in the very cold water. We thought we would skip that experience.
We watched the
funny machines known as a "sandworm" that drive people back and forth to
the point and the parking lot. We decided we could walk and did, enjoying the
sand dunes. Yes, they have sand dunes in Denmark if you don’t know that.
We wanted to ride
to see another tourist site called the Buried Church. This place was built a
couple hundred years ago as a church which kept getting buried in the sand and
would have to be dug out for services. Eventually, they closed it up but just
kept the bell tower as a reminder. We had offline google maps and a marginal
local map... so we surely went the very long way around. After a long time, we
arrived. We got a well-earned expensive ice cream cone. It was really a lovely
country site. So, we were glad we went, but it was a long bike ride.
We came back into
the town and had the chance to do a little “drive by listening” to some of the
venues at a town wide music festival. After 6 hours in our bike, we were ready
to get back to the ship. More music later on our trip.
Patti joined many
other people taking advantage of the free dockside WiFi. It is quite a
culturally challenging things to it have WiFi most of the time for 12 days.
We had dinner,
watched “Mary Poppins Returns” while we packed and headed to bed. Dick had a
little excitement when we got locked out of the cabin while taking the
suitcases out and Patti was so sound asleep that she didn’t hear him tapping
and then pounding on the door. Luckily, one of the room stewards was able to
let him in.
