Day two, June 15, 2024: Landing in Gatwick Airport London, getting to Bath, UK We landed at Gatwick Airport south of London in the light rain with the temperature of 13°C, which is about 55 Fahrenheit. Welcome to soggy England. We had allowed ourselves an hour or so hour to get through customs and find our way to the train station. Much to our delight and surprise, it took around 5 minutes to go through passport control and then we just breezed through customs without anybody looking twice at us. We were able to gather our things together and Patti went over and got a cup of coffee and a cup of English breakfast tea for Dick. Nice that we had plenty of time and we could sit and soak it in a little bit and have a little caffeine. As it turns out, the train was really quite close by and so we had some extra waiting time, but it was very nice not to rush. Negotiating the train was very straightforward. It is so much easier when everything is in English. We took one train to Reading, and then with a 25 minute wait, switched trains to Bath. We got to do one of Dick’s favorite activities: riding on a train looking at the countryside. He immediately noted how green everything is; so much more green than back in San Diego. W went by apartment buildings and backyards and some stereotypically cute small villages. By the time we arrived at Bath (an old Roman City known for it healing waters), we were both very tired. Luckily our Airbnb was a five minute walk away and the check in was easy. We got to our apartment at about 4:45pm London time. About 23 hours after having left home in San Diego. It was a long day. We make a quick trip to the grocery (two easy blocks away), took a tiny nap and tried to stay awake until a reasonable bed time. We heated ourselves up some dinner, having had to look up on You-Tube how to use the fancy Bosch oven with a fan, once we figured it out, it worked great! The town is just charming and we looked forward to be able to walk around and see things. Every once in a while we would pinch our self, yes here we are in England. But for now, to bed, both taking some melatonin to try to get our jet lagged systems set to London time. We have arrived. The adventure has begun in earnest.
