Day 4: June 18 Driggs, Idaho to East Glacier Park, Montana.

We woke up to a heavy, overcast and drizzle day. It’s a little easier leaving the mountains when you can’t see them very well through the clouds. We said goodbye to our tiny house in the mountains.

We headed to East Glacier by Glacier National Park. But, we decided to make a stop in at a Scenic Byway Trail, taking us by two of the largest waterfalls in Idaho. By the time we were headed that direction, the rain was coming down pretty steadily. We decided to persevere  and see if we could see anything of these wonderful waterfalls we have been hearing about. We put on our rain gear, dug out our umbrellas and drove through some particularly lovely areas.

The Upper and Lower Mesa Waterfalls were gorgeous.  We were so glad to have the rain lighten up while we were visiting them.  Both had observation areas and paths that you could see these last two natural waterfalls in Idaho.  They were worth a visit, and we also really enjoyed how pretty the countryside was in the surrounding area.

After our waterfall adventure, we headed back north moving to join with highways headed towards Montana. Dick drove through some torrential storms, and then Patti took her turn driving.

We had to make a stop at an ice cream parlor that had several giant dinosaurs outside. The ice cream was delicious, although the workers could say for sure why they had dinos there...but there had been been a lot of dinosaurs bones found i, the area.

The rolling hills eventual gave way to glimpses of the Rocky Mountains in all of their glory.

We continued to look for license plates, and are hopeful that Glacier National Park will be another place with lots of visitors from around the US.  Our list is growing!

Our home for the next three nights is at the Whistling Swan Motel in East Glacier Park. It is a quirky old motel built in the 1940’s, but will work fine as our home base.

We had a nice walk (about a mile round trip) to The Whistle Stop Cafe, near the train station. There we had a great dinner, and enjoyed talking with the serving staff who were all young people in their 20’s on a program to work for 3 months in the summer and then travel for a month.  Our server was from Lithuania.  Others were from Romania, Turkey and Columbia.  Their summer adventure was just beginning and we enjoyed talking with them.

The evening was spent settled into our hotel room, napping and catching up on our blog reflections.  The next two days will give us some great time to enjoy this splendid area.
